Bitcoin (abbr : BTC or XBT ) is a cryptocurrency and online payment system based on open source protocol that is independent of any central authority. A bitcoin can be transferred from a computer or smartphone without using a financial institution. The concept was introduced in 2008 in an article published by a group with the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto who called it electronic system of peer to peer payment.
Very briefly , its a payment system via the Internet. It was designed and implemented using free software ( "open source" ) in 2008 by a mysterious figure who called himself Satoshi Nakamoto, who never came right out and only manifested through messages posted on the website of Bitcoin Foundation, and then vanished without never effectively proved its existence.
Some consider it a "virtual currency" although actually it´s not a currency, as it has no physical existence. The bitcoins ( from now on we´ll adopt a convention : " Bitcoin " capitalized, refers to the system as " bitcoin " with lower case , the " currency ") are not issued by any monetary authority. The new " coins " come into circulation through a complex system of " mining " that uses a specially developed software running on very powerful computers.
This way it can not be controlled by governments. And because the system has no central authority, actually it can not be controlled by whoever. The only control over your value is exercised by the market. And as every transaction is necessarily made ??over the Internet, on which any government has control, the attitudes of many countries on the Bitcoin system are varied to controversial ( but no entirely favorable) , some forbidding companies and official bodies to make transactions such as China, the other regulating the actions of its citizens , as the US - that does not consider the bitcoin as a currency , but as " property " - and others , such as the European Union , warning their banks to avvoid transactions with bitcoins until it is established a regulatory regimen.
Bitcoins can be used to purchase goods (mostly often in virtual stores, but it is increasing the number of real merchants that accept them), pay services or perform any other transaction that may be made with a real currency. While it has no physical existence , the only way to store them is to use "virtual wallets", strongly encrypted systems that keep track of how many bitcoins its owner has and which have mechanisms that allow transfers between them, so that bitcoins can circulate.
After suffering heavy blows as the bankruptcy of one its majors operators of Bitcoin, the system has proven itself capable of handling such situations. The Bitcoin system , it seems, has gained credibility and began to spread. So much so that Google began to accept bitcoin (whose abbreviation is BTC ) in their currencies quotes converter. In addition, the UK has created the UK Digital Currency Association ( UK Association for digital currency) that has just received an investment of two million sterling pounds by Elliptic company that offers a secure storage service for digital currencies.
A Gregory Ferenstein report published in the business section of VB News site, on 2015 July 11, realizes that the total number of bitcoins in circulation on the date of publication amounted to more than eight billion dollars and the number of wallets (which roughly corresponds to the number of system users) grew 700 percent in one year.
Finally , the respected analyst Richard Goold has just published the article " Bitcoin broken down : Is it a bubble" in Tech City News in which implies that the system has recovered and, after mentioning the Elliptic investment, states that " there´s no doubt we will see many other companies based in London making serious investments in this area in a few years."
